그 땅의 거인들

우리가 곧 올라가서 그 땅을 취하자 능히 이기리라-민수기 13:30
시내산 근처에 진을 친지 2년이 지나고, 이제 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님이 그들에게 약속해주신 가나안 땅으로 들어가기 직전에 있었습니다. 하나님은 그들에게 12명의 정탐꾼을 보내어 그곳에 살고 있는 사람들과 땅을 알아보라고 말씀하셨습니다. 정탐꾼들이 가나안 사람들의 강한 모습과 그 도시의 크기를 보고 와서, 그중 열 명은 “불가능합니다!”라고 하였고, 나머지 두 명은 “가능합니다!”라고 하였습니다.
무엇 때문에 이런 차이가 나게 되었을까요?
열 명은 거인들을 그들 자신과 비교했기에 거인들이 거대하게 보였고, 다른 두 명인 갈렙과 여호수아는 거인들을 하나님과 비교하니 그 크기가 작아보였던 것입니다. 그들은 “여호와는 우리와 함께 하시느니라 그들을 두려워하지 말라”(민 14:9)라고 말하였습니다.
불신앙으로는 결코 난공불락의 도시와 무적의 거인들 같은 어려움들을 극복할 수 없습니다. 어려움에 마음을 빼앗겨 그 생각에 사로잡혀 있다가 인간적인 자원으로만 그에 대처하게 만들 뿐입니다.
반면에, 믿음은 어떤 환경의 위험이나 어려움을 최소화하는 것이 결코 아니라, 오히려 그것들로부터 눈을 떼어 하나님을 바라보고 하나님의 보이지 않는 도우심과 능력을 의지합니다.
당신의 ‘거인’은 무엇입니까? 깨뜨릴 수 없는 습관입니까? 저항할 수 없는 유혹입니까? 어려운 결혼생활입니까? 아니면 마약에 중독된 자녀입니까? 어려움들을 우리 자신과 비교한다면 우리는 항상 그것에 압도당하고 말 것입니다. 믿음은 어려운 일의 거대함으로부터 전능하시고 무소부재하신 하나님의 위대하심으로 눈을 돌리는 것입니다.
사랑하는 주님, 내 삶의 ‘거인’이 두려움으로 나를 압도하기 시작할 때 주님을 신뢰할 수 있도록 도와주소서.
두려움이 마음의 문을 두드리면 믿음으로 그에 대응하라.
Giants in the Land

We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it. Numbers 13:30
After being encamped near Mt. Sinai for two years, the people of Israel were on the verge of entering Canaan—the land God had promised them. God told them to send twelve spies to assess the land and the people living there. When the spies saw the strength of the Canaanites and the size of their cities, ten of them said, “We can’t!” Two said, “We can!”
What made the difference?
When the ten compared the giants with themselves and the giants loomed large, the two—Caleb and Joshua—compared the giants with God, and the giants were cut down to size. “The Lord is with us,” they said. “Do not be afraid of them” (Num. 14:9).
Unbelief never lets us get beyond the difficulties—the impregnable cities and the impossible giants. It preoccupies itself with them, brooding over them, pitting them against mere human resources.
Faith, on the other hand, though it never minimizes the dangers and difficulties of any circumstance, looks away from them to God and counts on His invisible presence and power.
What are your “giants”? A habit you cannot break? A temptation you cannot resist? A difficult marriage? A drug-abusing son or daughter?
If we compare ourselves with our difficulties, we will always be overwhelmed. Faith looks away from the greatness of the undertaking to the greatness of an ever-present, all-powerful God. David Roper
Dear Lord, when the “giants” in my life begin to overwhelm me with fear, help me to trust in You.
