상상을 초월하는 것

시대를 초월하여 가장 뛰어난 장난감 다섯 개는 무엇일까요? 조나단 류는 (wired.com의 GeekDad 칼럼에서) 막대기와 상자, 끈, 골판지 관, 그리고 흙을 꼽았습니다. 그것들은 모두 쉽게 구할 수 있고, 다방면에 쓰이며, 모든 연령에 적합하고, 가격이 무척 싸고, 상상력의 힘으로 작동됩니다. 건전지가 전혀 필요 없습니다.
상상력은 우리 삶에서 강력한 역할을 하기 때문에, 바울 사도가 에베소의 교인들을 위해 기도할 때 상상력을 언급한 것은 전혀 이상하지 않습니다(엡 3:14-21). 하나님의 성령을 통해 그들을 하나님의 능력으로 강건하게 해주시기를 간구한 후에(16절), 바울은 그들이 그리스도의 사랑의 모든 차원을 다 경험하고 깨달을 수 있게 되기를 기도했습니다(17-19절). 그리고 마지막으로 “우리 가운데서 역사하시는 능력대로 우리가 구하거나 생각하는 모든 것에 더 넘치도록 능히 하실 이에게”(20절) 영광을 돌렸습니다.
달라질 것 같아 보이지 않는 상황, 없어지지 않는 파괴적인 습관, 변화를 거부하는 오래된 태도 등과 같은 우리의 경험들 때문에 우리는 자주 기도에 한계를 느낍니다. 시간이 흘러갈수록 우리는 어떤 것들은 변할 수 없다고 느끼기 시작하기도 합니다. 그러나 바울은 그렇지 않다고 말합니다.
하나님은 우리 안에 강한 능력으로 역사하셔서, 우리가 감히 구하거나 꿈꿀 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 더 많은 일을 하실 수 있습니다.
사랑하는 하나님 아버지, 당신의 아들을 통해 우리에게 주신 모든 것, 용서, 소망, 격려, 새 삶을 살 수 있는 능력들을 오늘 받아들일 수 있도록 도와주소서.
하나님의 무한하신 능력을 당신의 유한한 기대로 결코 측량하지 말라.
More Than We Can Imagine

All are readily available, versatile, appropriate for all ages, fit every budget, and are powered by imagination. No batteries required.
Imagination plays a powerful role in our lives, so it’s not unusual that the apostle Paul mentioned it in his prayer for the followers of Jesus in Ephesus (Eph. 3:14–21). After asking God to strengthen them with His power through His Spirit (v. 16), Paul prayed that they would be able to grasp and experience the full dimension of the love of Christ (vv. 17–19). In closing, Paul gave glory to “him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (v. 20).
Often our experience limits our prayers—a situation we can’t picture being different; destructive habits that remain unbroken; long-held attitudes that seen to defy change. As time passes, we may begin to feel that some things cannot be changed. But Paul says that is not true.
By God’s mighty power working in us, He is able to do far more than we may dare to ask or even dream of. David McCasland
Dear Father, help us today to embrace all that You have given us in Your Son—forgiveness, hope, encouragement, and power to live a new life.
Never measure God’s unlimited power by your limited expectations.
