가장 좋은 영원한 친구

아브라함이 하나님을 믿으니…그는 하나님의 벗이라 칭함을 받았나니-야고보서 2:23

아버지가 자주 하셨던 말씀 가운데 내가 그 진가를 알게 된 지혜로운 말 한 마디가 있습니다. 그것은 “조, 좋은 친구는 삶에 있어 가장 큰 보물 중의 하나야.”라는 말입니다. 정말 그렇습니다! 좋은 친구가 있으면 절대로 외롭지 않습니다. 그들은 당신의 필요에 주의를 기울이고, 삶의 기쁨과 무거운 짐을 기쁜 마음으로 함께 나눕니다.

예수님이 이 세상에 오시기 전에 오직 두 사람 만이 하나님의 친구라 불렸습니다. 하나님은 “자기의 친구와 이야기함 같이”(출 33:11) 모세에게 말씀하셨고, 아브라함은 “하나님의 벗이라 칭함을 받았습니다”(약 2:23; 대하 20:7; 사 41:8 참조)

나는 예수님이 그분께 속한 우리를 친구라 부르시는 것에 놀랍니다. “너희를 친구라 하였노니 내가 내 아버지께 들은 것을 다 너희에게 알게 하였음이라”(요 15:15). 그리고 주님의 그 우정은 너무 깊어서 우리를 위해 자신의 목숨까지도 내주셨습니다. 요한복음에서 요한은 “사람이 친구를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리면 이보다 더 큰 사랑이 없나니”(13절)라고 말합니다.

예수님이 우리의 친구가 된 것이 얼마나 축복이며 특권인지요! 주님은 우리를 결코 버리지 않고, 떠나지 않으실 그런 친구입니다. 주님은 하나님 앞에서 우리를 위해 중재하시고 우리의 모든 필요를 공급해주십니다. 주님은 우리의 죄를 용서하시고, 우리의 슬픔을 아시며, 환난 중에 우리에게 넘치는 은혜를 주십니다. 예수님은 진실로 우리의 가장 좋은 친구입니다!

  • 주님, 주님께서 저를 친구라 불러주시니 감사합니다. 그 특권을 평생 감사할 수 있게 하소서!

One of the pieces of wisdom I have come to appreciate is my dad’s often-repeated statement, “Joe, good friends are one of life’s greatest treasures.” How true! With good friends, you are never alone. They’re attentive to your needs and gladly share life’s joys and burdens.

Before Jesus came to earth, only two individuals were called friends of God. The Lord spoke to Moses “as one speaks to a friend” (Ex. 33:11), and Abraham “was called God’s friend” (James 2:23; see 2 Chron. 20:7; Isa. 41:8).

I am amazed that Jesus calls those of us who belong to Him friends: “I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15). And His friendship is so deep that He laid down His life for us. John says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (v. 13).

What a privilege and blessing to have Jesus as our friend! He is a friend who will never leave us or forsake us. He intercedes for us before the Father and supplies all our needs. He forgives all our sins, understands all our sorrows, and gives us sufficient grace in times of trouble. He is indeed our best friend! —Joe Stowell
