잘못된 말발굽

생명을 사모하고 연수를 사랑하여 복 받기를 원하는 사람이 누구뇨 네 혀를 악에서 금하며-시편 34:12-13

200년 전 나폴레옹이 러시아에서 패배한 것은 혹독한 러시아의 겨울 때문이었습니다. 그 중 특별한 한 가지 문제는 그의 말들이 여름용 말발굽을 착용하고 있었다는 것입니다. 겨울이 오자 이 말들은 꽁꽁 얼은 길에서 식량공급 마차를 끌다가 미끄러지면서 죽어갔습니다. 나폴레옹의 군수물자 공급망의 실패가 사십만 명이 넘던 군대를 겨우 만 명으로 줄여놓았습니다. 아주 사소한 실수가 막대한 피해를 초래한 것이지요!

야고보는 혀의 작은 실수가 얼마나 큰 피해를 줄 수 있는지 기술하였습니다. 잘못된 한마디의 말이 사람들의 직업이나 인생을 바꾸어놓을 수가 있습니다. 혀가 얼마나 무서운 독이 될 수 있는지를 야고보는 “혀는 능히 길들일 사람이 없나니 쉬지 아니하는 악이요 죽이는 독이 가득한 것이라”(약 3:8)라고 쓰고 있습니다. 지금 우리가 사는 세대는 이 문제가 더 심각합니다. 무책임한 이메일이나 소셜 미디어에 올린 글이 큰 피해를 초래할 수 있기 때문입니다. 그것은 너무 빨리 퍼져나가기 때문에 언제나 되돌릴 수가 없습니다.

다윗왕은 주님을 공경하는 것을 우리가 사용하는 언어와 관련지었습니다. “내가 여호와를 경외하는 법을 너희에게 가르치리로다…네 혀를 악에서 금하며 네 입술을 거짓말에서 금할지어다”(시 34:11,13). 그러고는 “나의 행위를 조심하여 내 혀로 범죄하지 아니하리니…내가 내 입에 재갈을 먹이리라”(39:1)라고 결심하였습니다. 주님, 저도 그와 같이 할 수 있게 도와주소서.

Napoleon’s defeat in Russia 200 years ago was attributed to the harsh Russian winter. One specific problem was that his horses were wearing summer horseshoes. When winter came, these horses died because they slipped on icy roads as they pulled the supply wagons. The failure of Napoleon’s supply chain reduced his 400,000-strong army to just 10,000. A small slip; a disastrous result!

James described how a slip of the tongue can do great damage. One wrong word can change the careers or destinies of people. So toxic is the tongue that James wrote, “No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8). The problem has increased in our modern world as a careless email or a posting on a social media site can cause great harm. It quickly goes viral and can’t always be retracted.

King David tied respect for the Lord with the way we use our words. He wrote, “I will teach you the fear of the Lord. . . . Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies” (Ps. 34:11, 13). He resolved, “I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth” (Ps. 39:1).
