과거를 벗어남

크리스 베이커는 고통과 노예의 상징인 문신들을 예술작품으로 바꾸는 문신 예술가입니다. 그의 고객 중 상당수는 과거에 폭력단이었거나 인신매매의 희생자들로, 몸에 식별용 이름이나 상징, 암호들로 표시가 되어 있었습니다. 크리스는 그것들 위에 새 문신을 그려서 그것들을 아름다운 예술작품으로 바꿔놓습니다.
크리스 베이커가 피부 위에 하는 일을 예수님은 영혼에 하십니다. 주님은 우리 모습 그대로를 받아들이고 우리를 변화시켜주십니다. 성경은 “누구든지 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라 이전 것은 지나갔으니 보라 새 것이 되었도다”(고후 5:17)라고 말씀합니다. 주님을 알기 전에 우리는 어떻게 되든 욕심이 이끄는 대로 살고, 우리 삶도 그런 모습을 그대로 보여줍니다. 그러나 우리가 회개하고 그리스도와 함께 걷기 시작하면, 예전에 우리를 지배하던 욕정과 유혹은 “이전 것”이 되어 사라져버립니다(고전 6:9-11). “모든 것이 하나님께로서 났으며 그가 그리스도로 말미암아 우리를 자기와 화목하게 하시고”(고후 5:18).
그렇지만, “새 사람”으로서의 삶이 언제나 쉬운 것은 아닙니다. 옛 습관을 끊어버리는 데에는 시간이 많이 걸리기도 합니다. 예전의 삶을 지배하던 생각들과 싸워야하기도 합니다. 그래도 시간이 좀 지나면 성령님이 우리 안에 역사하셔서 우리에게 내적인 힘을 주시고 주님의 사랑을 이해하게 해주십니다. 하나님의 아름다운 새 피조물로서 우리는 과거에서 벗어날 수 있습니다.
예수님, 죽음을 이기고 부활하심에 감사드립니다. 죄를 이기심으로 우리가 용서받고 주님 안에서 새 삶을 누릴 수 있습니다.
하나님께 과거를 용서받고 새 삶을 누리자.

Chris Baker is a tattoo artist who transforms symbols of pain and enslavement into works of art. Many of his clients are former gang members and victims of human trafficking who have been marked with identifying names, symbols, or codes. Chris transforms these into beautiful art by tattooing over them with new images.
Jesus does for the soul what Chris Baker does for the skin—He takes us as we are and transforms us. The Bible says, “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Cor. 5:17 nlt). Before knowing Christ, we follow our desires wherever they lead us, and our lifestyles reflect this. When we repent and begin to walk with Christ, the passions and pitfalls that once dominated our lives is the “old life” (1 Cor. 6:9–11) that fades away as we are transformed. “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ” (2 Cor. 5:18).
Still, life as a “new person” isn’t always easy. It can take time to disconnect from old habits. We may struggle with ideas that were foundational to our old way of life. Yet over time, God’s Holy Spirit works in us, giving us inner strength and an understanding of Christ’s love. As God’s beautiful new creations, we’re free to leave the past behind. —Jennifer Benson Schuldt
Jesus, thank You for the power of Your death and resurrection. Your victory over sin means that I can be forgiven and can enjoy a new life in You.
To enjoy the future, accept God’s forgiveness for the past.
